About me

Hello, I’m Lydia

Music has always been a fundamental part of my family life. With older siblings learning instruments, I was reading music before I even learned to read. As a multi-woodwind instrumentalist, I started my vocal training at 16, and due to my vocal range and power, I was encouraged to pursue classical music and eventually opera. However, my love for Jazz and Gospel was too strong to ignore. As a student, I had the opportunity to work with incredible talents like Anita Wardel (BBC Jazz Musician of the Year 2006) and Karen Gibson (Kingdom Gospel Choir), and my passion for vocal versatility was born.

At the age of 21, I became a singing teacher and vocal coach, and my first experience working with a student who had vocal health issues sparked a recurring theme throughout my more than 25 years in the profession. Watching students overcome seemingly insurmountable vocal pathologies by understanding the physiology and psychological impact of vocal identity has become my passion, especially with my background in counseling.

After moving to London in 2007, I’ve worked at several of the top drama schools (Mountview, GSA, Urdang and Italia Conti) as a vocal coach, director, and acting teacher . This has led me to coach professionals in the vocally demanding world of musical theatre, where auditions for Phantom in the morning and Rock of Ages in the afternoon are the norm.

My continued study of vocal acoustics and how to apply them in the vocal coaching room has helped me develop a constantly evolving teaching practice. I focus on both auditory and physiological feedback—what does it sound like, and what does it feel like?
